We are nearing the end of the Easter Season with the approaching feast of Pentecost - the coming of the Holy Spirit. In his public ministry, Jesus was a Paraclete to the disciples, but today we heard in the gospel that Jesus promised another Paraclete: "I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Paraclete" (John 14:16).
There are many different translations of the Greek word, "Paracletos", including, Advocate, Comforter, Counsellor, and Helper. In English, the closest translation would be "Coach". The Paraclete is our coach, always by our side to instruct and correct us when we make mistakes, to encourage and motivate us when we feel down, and to challenge and inspire us to be the best we can be.
During this time of our waiting, let us recall that day when the disciples, together with Mary, our Mother, gathered together in the 'upper room' and received the gifts of the Holy Spirit. May we become open to receive the Spirit of God in our lives so that we may proclaim the gospel of our Lord through the witness of love for one another.
