Perhaps the most elaborate representation of our spiritual condition as Christians is the gospel story of the Sower. God sows the seed - His Word, into our hearts. However, the growth of that seed depends on the condition by which the Word of God is received. In this Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus is inviting us to reflect on what kind of soil are we in receiving the Word of God - the seed of the gospel values.
The seed that falls on the path is a situation common in our culture and in cultures throughout the world. Many Christians separate the practice of their Christian faith outside of the Church.Their values in life do not reflect that of the gospel. The seed that falls in rocky soil cannot grow because of its hard and impenetrable surface. This represents those people who have never made an effort to grow in the knowledge of their faith, and are Christians in name only. Then there is the seed that falls in thorny soil, which represents the condition of those who have been caught up in the activities of the world and do not find the time to nurture their faith.
God's word never changes in touching our hearts to become good soil. Let us pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to nourish our hearts with God's grace, so that we may receive the Word of God - believing in it and living it out in our daily lives.
